Getting around Pattaya and the school run

Most families in Pattaya rely on a car, a school bus or both. The city is spread out, and public transport is informal.

Sukhumvit Road

Sukhumvit Road, Highway 3, runs north to south through Pattaya, separating the beach side from East Pattaya. Crossing or travelling along it at rush hour can be slow. When you look at houses, check how the route to school crosses it.

School buses

Many international schools run bus services, usually charged per term. Ask about the route, the first pick-up time and whether a staff member travels on the bus.

Songthaews

Songthaews, pick-up trucks with two benches in the back, run fixed loops along Beach Road and Second Road and other routes. They are cheap and frequent in the centre, but they are not a practical school run for young children.

Driving

Driving is on the left. Foreign drivers need a valid licence. Many long-term residents get a Thai driving licence. Car seats for children are not as widely used as in some countries, so bring or buy one.

Motorbikes

Many residents use motorbikes, but they carry a high risk of injury, especially with children. Most families with young children choose a car.
